Section 1
David's Studio - Introduction to Landscape Painting/ Composition of Old Masters David continues his series of painting DVDs with an introduction to painting a landscape in oil. In this 90-minute DVD, David visits the ancient countryside of Tuscany near the town of Artimino.
Section 2a
Out in the Field - Two Different Painting Demonstrations The DVD has two different demonstrations: 1) a panoramic view of the scenery across a valley near Vinci, close the the trail walked by Leonardo da Vinci on his trips to Florence, and 2) an olive grove near Artinio overlooking a church and a village. He discusses his thoughts when choosing a scene for a painting, and outlines his steps for designing the painting.
Section 2b
Out in the Field - Design and Sketching the Scene David diagrams each of the two scenes, discussing the Macchiaoli, or Italian Impressionists who painted in the early 1900's. He discusses the structure and design of the painting and demonstrates a drawing of his design. David is a superb, entertaining teacher and fills this DVD with his unique style, encouragement and historical perspective.
Section 3
Painting Foliage, Water and the Sky David then paints his plein air painting of the scene, demonstrating many painting techniques for shaping, toning and creating texture in a painting. He specifically focuses on an Old Master technique of reductive painting, which permits the painter to retain great luminosity and a wide variety of brushstrokes to create a more interesting painting. (65 minutes)
